INTRODUCTION


Teams were ranked by their performances in the World Cups of 2010 and 2014 as well as their last 2 continental championships. 5 points for a win, 4 for a final, 3 for a semi, 2 for a quarter and 1 for an appearance.

The seeded teams were as follows:

Argentina & Germany (14 pts) Chile & Spain (12 pts)

The second seeds were as follows:

Australia (11 pts) Ghana, Portugal, USA (10 pts)

The next 8 teams were kept in a separate pot and would be divided 2 per group:

France, Ivory Coast, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea (9 pts) Brazil, Italy (8 pts)

The final 8 teams were kept in a separate pot and would be divided 2 per group:

Netherlands (8 pts) Netherlands ranked below Italy as they had only appeared in 3 of the eligible 4 tournaments. Italy had appeared in all 4.

Colombia, Nigeria, Uruguay (7 pts)

Costa Rica, Paraguay (6 pts)

Algeria, England (5 pts)

Group B

Portugal were eliminated despite Cristiano Ronaldo's 5 goals. Mexico topped the group helped by 3 from Chicarito. Aguero with 4 goals and Higuan with 3 helped see Argentina through.

The 'group of death' was surprisingly straightforward with the big 2 teams qualifying comfortably. Neymar on 3 and Kroos & Gotze seeing Brazil and Germany through to the Quarter-Finals.

Quarter-Finals

Italy were surprisingly dumped out of the competition by Brazil thanks to 2 goals from Neymar and 1 from Oscar. Aguero and Mertesacker scored the only goals in victories for Argentina and Germany.

Semi-Finals

Oscar scored an extra timewinner for Brazil adding to goals by Hulk and Willian against Argentina who had scored through Lavezzi and Aguero. Mertesacker scored for the second knockout game in a row.

Final

A hattrick for Reus with the other German goals coming from Gotze and Schurrle. Oscar nabbed a late consolation.

Topscorers

Cristiano Ronaldo's performance was all the more remarkable as it was done entirely in the group stages. Reus' was remarkable as 3 of his goals came in the final. However top scorer Aguero managed to score in 6 different games to secure the Golden Boot.
